If you are watching a PeerTube video on an instance how do you like the video, comment or reply?
With A PeerTube Account
If you have a PeerTube account you should open an interact with the video on your own instance.
- Copy The URL of the video
- Search for this URL on your own instance
- Open the result
You are now able to like, comment, add to playlists and interact with video. Your interactions are transmitted back to the instance the video is hosted on showing up as comments and likes below the video unless you or your instance gets blocked.
Should I Create An Account On The Instance?
If this is just a video you have come across: Probably not. You usually only have one PeerTube account on the instance that you plan to actively use for creating playlists and perhaps even uploading your own videos.
PeerTube has not implemented a move command yet so migrating your account to a different PeerTube server is not possible. We recommend choosing an instance carefully or starting your own instance if you plan to upload videos.
With A Mastodon Account
A more casual PeerTube viewer can view and interact with PeerTube from their Mastodon account without needing to maintain a separate PeerTube account.
To Like or Comment On A Video
- Copy The URL of the video
- Search for this URL on your Mastodon instance
- Select "Open URL in Mastodon'
Favourites
If you favourite a video this will become a like or "thumbs up" in PeerTube.
Comments
You can comment on the video and if you or someone else on your server was following this PeerTube account when the video was released all the other comments made on the video will be visible below it.
Follows
If you follow the PeerTube account you will get videos released from this point on right there in your Mastodon feed. You can them comment and favourite without having to do the above steps next time.
To Reply To A Comment On A Video
Sometimes when you see a comment on a video that you want to reply to you won't see it included in Mastodon. This is because the video was not being followed by you or someone else on your Mastodon instance when the comment you want to reply to was made.
The comments from the "Video" and "Biff" account are not visible when you open this video on the Mastodon sever. How is this user supposed to get a free consultation?
To get this comment you just need to point your Mastodon instance directly to the comment instead of the video.
- To the right of the comment you will see a time field that is also a direct link to the comment, copy the link
- Search for this link on your Mastodon instance
You can now reply to this comment. It will be transmitted back to the PeerTube instance and placed as a reply below it. Your own Mastodon instance will also show this comment in place below the Mastodon video.
